These days, a selfie has become an indispensable social networking means of communications that is changing the way we interact with our surroundings and people. The way other people in social media see us is based on how we present our personas and the extent to which we expose ourselves. “Selfie-ing” has become a language. Wikipedia defines a selfie as “a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or camera phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick.”
This year, IPA Philippines takes inspiration from this visual phenomenon called “Selfie” as the take off point of our Selfie Photo Competition. Through this contest, IPA Philippines aims to document the contemporary visual culture that is affecting the daily lives of Filipinos in the Philippines and elsewhere. But rather than interpreting its negative narcissistic aspect, we want to see how Filipino participants use a Selfie as tool for expressing their ideas, and their idealism, as they reflect everyday events, whether personal, cultural, social or environmental.
Open to all Filipinos worldwide, the competition accepts entries that were taken through a camera (phone camera, digital camera – mirrorless, DSLR, point and shoot) using the hands or a selfie stick.
While the term selfie may indicate a photo where the camera was directed to one self when shot, it could also show a photo of oneself where the surrounding elements are included that make up the whole photo. This could be people: friends, family and love ones or even strangers. This could also be environment: work place, study place, tourism destinations or even home.
Creativity matters a lot in this competition. The competition expects the participants not just to focus on “self” but to explore the method of shooting oneself depicting human evolution as the background:
Birth- it can be a selfie shot depicting a family or a person that brought to the world a new life which is a baby.
Childhood-it can be a selfie shot that captures the frolic moments of kids that enjoy the primary stages of life.
Love-it can be a selfie shot of ourselves cherishing the moments with our love ones or showing our affection or love to another person.
Marriage-it can be a selfie shot of the wedding day of either the groom or the couple, documenting the very moment that binds the two persons together or any selfie shot that celebrates lasting and enduring relationship.
Old Age-it can be a selfie that records the prime stage of life to immortalize fleeting moments of life.
Youth-it could be you and the current generations longings and dreams as well as seizing the day of learning all the wisdom life can offer.
